My home is in Jakarta, Indonesia. A country filled with wondrous spices. Cravings on foods in Indonesia is always heaven for culinary lovers. But, you gotta have a rubber tummy. In one day, you must be able to eat more than 4 dishes in a row or else, you won't be experiencing the many true taste of Indonesia.

As for me, I am Chinese-Indonesian, I have my Chinese food cravings, also, the best pure Indonesian foods too. Most of the Chinese foods I miss are my home cooked foods, whether it is cooked by my grandma or my mother, their pure genuine love is always through the food they cook for me and my brother.

So, without further do, I would love to share some of my most favourite food back home.

1. Soto Betawi

Soto betawi is my most favourite Indonesian dish. It is soup mixed with coconut milk or regular milk, along with other ingredients, with many different innards of cow. I would always have it only with beef meat and lungs. Some of this Soto Betawi dishes are accompanied with tomatoes, emptying crackers, spring onions, potatoes and some fried onions. To have a better visual explanation refer to the images below.

2. Sate

Sate Ayam is yet another favourite. Sate Ayam usually is sweet soy sauced grilled and eaten with sticky rice, called “lontong”. I love it because the tenderness of the chicken and the blend of its taste is just unforgettable and addictive. As for me, I do not eat them with lontong, instead I always eat Sate Ayam with white steamed rice. It is because lontong is always too filling for me. Now this won’t be a dish for anyone who has allergies on peanuts. What makes the whole dish extra delicious is the peanut sauce. But, there sure is another type of sate that does not require any peanut sauce at all.

Sate Taichan, is one of the currently trending sate dish which only involves salt, seasoning powder, and some really deliciously spicy sauce or what it’s called “sambal”. I love this type of sate because it gives you only a simple light taste with its salty taste. Just eat them like that and you are all good. No need rice or lontong.

3. Pempek

Pempek is from Palembang. Its taste and texture is unique. It gives you the crunch and the chewiness that makes you want more. But, you will always be confused when having to choose the different types of pempek. There’s kapal selam, lenjer, kulit, adaan, keriting, and few more. But the most common ones are kapal selam and lenjer. Pempek dish is usually served with spicy or sweet black fish sauce, with small amount of curly half dried noodles, small chopped cucumbers, small amount of rice noodles. I love it just as simple as the Pempek itself.

5. Soto Kudus

Another type of Soto. But, this one is clear soup Soto. With friend garlics, many bean sprout, jillian cut chicken, with rice, it is all simple and delicious. And very filling too. Perfect for any soup cravings you may be having. I love it because it is so delicious and tasty that I would always eat one bowl and finish without even knowing. And it is very light. I would feel full right after I am done eating.

6. Ayam Goreng Bumbu

This one may be the most addictive dish in Indonesia. Ayam goreng bumbu is friend chicken cooked with special spice like turmeric and “langkuas”. The chicken has to be perfectly fried, not too dry not too oily. Has to be just right in order to give that moist, tender chicken meat. What makes it real special and extra succulent is its spice topping. It is also only delicious when it is eaten with white steamed rice.

7. Ikan Baronang bakar

Grilled Baronang fish. Usually served in a Javanese seafood restaurant. I love this one because the whole flavour is very tasty and sweet. Just have it with steamed rice, the whole meal is set.

8. Cumi Goreng Tepung

Crunchy and chewy is probably my most loved texture in food. This is similar to fried calamari but only it is much smaller. Usually an additional dish with other seafood or Javanese or Sundanese cuisine. I usually have it with grilled Baronang fish. Delishhh!

9. Sapo Tahu Seafood

A Chinese-Indonesian dish. Fried Japanese soft tofu, cooked with mixed fried vegetables and sometimes with seafood or chicken. I really love it! Specially the tofu.

10. Ayam angkak

My grandma always always cook this for me. It is a Chinese traditional dish that is very healthy. It uses the small red seeds which makes it iconic and makes the soup red. I don’t really know what ingredients and spices my grandma puts but it tastes healthy and quite tasty too.

11. Baso Babi

Pork meatball.

12. Martabak Manis & Asin

Sweet and savoury. Martabak manis is usually filled with chocolate, cheese or peanut. I love it only half chocolate and half cheese. Martabak telor or martabak asin is usually more delicious when heated and eaten with chilli and pickles.

Martabak Manis: Chocolate

13. Es Podeng

A simple sweet treat with only low price by the streets. It is always such a treat for me after having a long day in school, going straight up to having tutors, just to freshen up a little, I would buy this Es Podeng. Filled with pink jelly, cubed bread, avocado, sweetened milk, coconut ice cream and some black sticky rice. AMAZING!

Those are my list of my most favourite foods in my home country, Indonesia. I personally recommend them for you to try them too whenever you visit Indonesia. It is my pleasure to be able to share this with you all. Have a great day and stay tuned for more readings!
